100 Free High Quality WordPress Themes: 2010 Edition

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since our last WordPress theme collection, but there you have it — the time has come again. Once a year we feature the most useful and interesting WordPress-themes that we are collecting over months and present them in a nice quick overview. The collections from 2007, 2008 and last year are still useful, but some of the themes are outdated or updated now.

Looking back over these previous theme articles, you can clearly see how and why WordPress has rapidly matured into the CMS powerhouse it is today. With all of the features that have been added and improvements made with every new WordPress version and with its ever-increasing popularity among the design and development community, the quality of free themes is evident. Developers are continually pushing WordPress’ boundaries, giving us today’s outstanding free theme collection.

Today, we present a fresh collection of useful WordPress themes. Please notice that some themes are a bit older, but they are included because we haven’t featured them last time. This round-up picks up where we left off last year: most themes below were released between June 2009 and August 2010. We’ve also split this collection into the following categories: gallery and portfolio themes, themes for bloggers, e-Commerce WordPress themes, clean themes, magazine-style themes, minimal themes, mobile themes; pre-launch themes; and finally “Themes That Take WordPress Beyond.”

You missed one of the most popular themes (by download) Suffusion. It is free and fully (really incredibly fully) configurable. I am nothing to do with the author but I use this theme on 10 sites and they all look completely different due to its flexibility. Have a look you won’t be disappointed.

I use it too. I agree it is a great theme. However, the support in the forum from the owner and his cohort is rude and arrogant.

        Dave,

please correct your statement. The developer is not arrogant at all, he is friendly, helpful and very patient.

The rude and arrogant cohorts = I think you mean me, as I am active in that forum and have a special humour sometimes, which is not appreciated by everybody.
        That’s life…

But please do not thow all persons in one bucket ;=)

Suffusion rocks, and I’ve even had Sayontan (the developer) drop by my blog when I posted there about performance problems. If anyone gets rude, it’s probably towards users who post questions that have already been answered. I’ve found the support forums to be incredible, and have had to actually post a question there only once.

Exactly. For instance, I have a friend who can’t pay me for a quick and simple site, but I’d like to help him out. Themes are the way to go. If I were building a site for a company, it would be a different story. Nice collection!

I agree. More importantly not all clients can afford expensive prices for a bespoke theme. I know a lot of start ups and individuals who wants a blog or portfolio site up but doesn’t have the budget to afford me or other developers.

When working with big clients who can afford to pay or agencies then its a different story. But for the lower end market Themes are the way to go.

Excellent selection. For starter themes, I’d also recommend Ian Stewart’s HTML5 theme Toolbox: http://themeshaper.com/toolbox-html5-starter-theme/

I also recently released a free portfolio theme that uses custom post types: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/portfolio-theme

Not feeling great about the $40 I just spent. I’ve left a comment on your site. Contact would be greatly appreciated.

Blissful Blog is nice.. but they charge $19.00 to get a FAQ for the design.. and even after paying the 19.00 I couldn’t get the lightbox to work.. and other lightbox plugins wont work with that theme chosen.

(works fine if you revert back to the wordpress default theme).

If someone figures out how to get it to work.. let me know.

Yeah!! Another creativity showcase, we need it because our own creativity is completely missing or somewhere down the drain pipe.

In most seriousness this is just sad. There are so many other ways to keep your audience. Showcases of free content are a waste of yours and ours time.

Take for example A list Apart, they aren’t publishing just for the sake of publishing. Publish a bit more rarely, but only high quality content.

    Also:
    1. No designer will use someone else’s design for his own blog/site/journal/whatever…
    2. No client would want to share the same template with about …. 1000 others around the globe.
    3. Don’t you have professional writers around?

Martin, thank you for your reply. We have a quite large readership. There are readers who are interested in showcases and round-ups and there are readers who are interested in though-provoking design-related articles. Our goal is to provide useful content for the web design community, and this is exactly what we are doing. E.g. round-ups of freely available fonts are always useful, and in this case showcase of free content is not waste of yours and ours time.

If you don’t like this post, why don’t you just skip it? There are plenty of non-round-up-articles on Smashing Magazine as well!

You also need to keep in mind that not all readers are professional designers or developers, and will find these themes helpful for their own sites, or to simply tear apart and look at the code, which is in my opinion one of the very best ways of learning. :)

Yes, seriously – showcases of free design templates usually consist of nothing but sad examples how even a good idea can look bad. They are full of mistakes and have unfinished look.

Not to mention that they are limited to a home page and sometimes a second text only page (if we are talking strictly for sites).

In most seriousness this is just sad. There are so many other ways to keep your audience. Showcases of free content are a waste of yours and ours time.

Technically, according to you, everything you read here is a waste of time. Why are you so obsessed with wasting time?!

Take for example A list Apart, they aren’t publishing just for the sake of publishing. Publish a bit more rarely, but only high quality content.

Bah. Another side-liner. Do not comment just to comment! There are a readers who read more often and leave less comments but, the comments are meaningful!

      Also:
      1. No designer will use someone else’s design for his own blog/site/journal/whatever…
      2. No client would want to share the same template with about …. 1000 others around the globe.

      1. Not all readers are designers.
      2. Not all readers are clients. Not all bloggers/website owners make money off their site. And not all of them mind sharing.
      3. Nah. Just good ones. :-)

      4. If you were a ‘regular reader’, you’d not have left a comment like this!

I am regular reader :) and the comment posted above is my personal opinion, it must not affect anyone, who likes this type of articles.

      Ooh! A disclaimer!? Lol!

There was a time, not that long ago, that you could read very interesting articles here. Like there are some new entries that grabbed my attention. But as a reader I have the right to comment, approve/disapprove etc….

Technically, according to you, everything you read here is a waste of time. Why are you so obsessed with wasting time?!.

Not everything, just showcases like this one, I still think they are useless. Also, if this is the designers magazine …. wtf are the non-designers doing here?

Bah. Another side-liner. Do not comment just to comment! There are a readers who read more often and leave less comments but, the comments are meaningful!.

This comment is not for the sake of commenting. I am giving examples with the site with the most sophisticated articles regarding web design (in my opinion).

Also, Smashing are big boys, they do not need defenders :) they need to post high-quality content.

The Structure theme appears not to be free. Though its page talks at length about it being a free theme, there doesn’t appear to be a way to download it. The only link I can find is buried in the “about” section, and doesn’t work. Going directly to the Organic Designs website says it costs $69: http://www.organicthemes.com/themes/

Hello, what problem have you encountered with FolioGrid? We’ve had several thousand downloads so far and not too many problems.

If you post on the site on this link, we should be able to help you out should you wish to use it: http://www.frogsthemes.com/articles/inspiration/a-look-at-websites-using-foliogrid/

The site and FolioGrid theme are undergoing massive changes in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for improved versions :) Ticketing, support wiki and documentation for the themes.

I can not recommend the use of the monekypr theme. Although it looks cool, the html code that lies beneath is terrible. It uses tables and empty div’s with inline styled height to set up the layout.
The gyus form Retro Design Studio better look for someone else to write the code! :(

I like the imbalance demo theme most on the list, the design is clean and minimalistic and shows off the art based site very well. The font for the header, and the minimal use of red complements the design well as it keeps to the simple theme.
Also the WPESP Theme in the portfolio section looks good, the colours work well together however i think that it could be improved if the navigation scrolled down with the rest of the page.

I’m going to try and say this without sounding rude, however themes that have encrypted code in the footer or any other file do not and will never classify as “high quality” it is a practice that is frowned upon by a great many in the WordPress community and such themes are not allowed in the WordPress theme site.

I really LOVE these types of articles despite what Martin says. I am new to wordpress development so kinda going theme crazy. Really looking forward to January 2011 best themes. I have to point out like a few here that the #1 theme Cumulus is no longer available and Empire Themes.com is a dead link. Also, some of the themes here do have security issues with static links and other oddities usually within the themes footer code I would sincerely appreciate that any future lists like this exclude those as best as possible because quite frankly I really like Smashing Magazine and would hate to stop reading or see your reputation tarnished as a result. Carry on the good work, I cannot wait to see more themes!

I’d suggest removing NewsPress from WPCrunchy.com
It’s been updated to v2 which I downloaded. There are backlinks in the footer, which is fair enough for a free theme, however it wasn’t until I spent some time customizing it that I noticed the backlinks are to gambling, credit and herbal sites.

This is a pretty scummy move, it’s not disclosed until it’s too late really. As far as I’m concerned hidden base64_encoded PHP in the footer puts WPCrunchy far too much in the category of the dodgy themes that turn up in a Google search.

Maimpok is a Padd Solution theme and it contains backdoor and base64 decode like the rest of Padd Solution themes.

There are a lot of honest FREE theme providers, but either PaddSolutions are just as deluded as they say in the encoded codes (why give premium themes for free if you can’t put sponsors message), or someone is trying hard to smear honest provider of Free themes.

I love Workaholic, Simplo and Clear. Great simple themes, great for writing some stuff with these themes. Today I finished my new theme “Two Sided”. In 2009 you have chosen the “Overstand” theme for your “100 quality wordpress themes” list. I would be very happy, if you could review the new “Two Sided” theme. Its´a mixture between a light magazine style and a classical blog style. I am curious if the theme could make it to the 2011 list. Nevertheless for all other readers who are interested in this new theme. Have a look at:

    Two sided theme

Have fun, keep on WordPressing and thank you for publishing great theme lists like this every year. It is really a pleasure.

Nice collection of themes. But I am wondering why bloggers do not use their own UNIQUE theme?

Even if it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that these public themes have it might be better to use something personalized. On my blog at aloe-vera-studies.org/ I had someone design a unique theme for me at a very affordable price. Eventhough I agree that some free themes are much nicer than mine I wouldn’t sacrifice personality and uniqueness!

    Just my 2 cents…

Overstand” theme for your “100 quality wordpress themes” list. I would be very happy, if you could review the new “Two Sided” theme. Its´a mixture between a light magazine style and a classical blog style. I am curious if the theme could make it to the 2011 list. Nevertheless for all other readers who are interested in this new theme use drmustafaerarslan.net
